Roof Underlayment and Its Significance in Tile RoofingMarch 29, 2022
The beauty visible to the eye may be the roof, but it’s the roof underlayment that makes it not just beautiful but sturdier.
Liken it to a movie, the lead role has a sidekick — the wind beneath their wings, the roof underlayment isthe secondary barrier, not a supernumerary feature, mind you, but just as significant.
If you follow industry standards, a roof with a 33-percentslope or greatermust have two layers of roof underlayment.
The basic types of underlayment are the following:
- Asphalt-saturated felt – the most common make is the organic one compared to the fibreglass substrate. This type of underlayment may be water-resistant but it’s not waterproof.
- Rubberized asphalt – this uses rubber-like materials as underlayment which is good at self-sealing. Its rubbery quality reacts well with fasteners like staples and nails.
- Non-bitumen synthetic – created from polypropylene or polyethylene, typically used to make products like food-storage containers, rope, and long underwear. This underlayment is a great moisture barrier being synthetic. Hence, it can prevent fungal growth and it’s wrinkle-free. It also has high strength and is lightweight.
Why Is Roof Underlayment Significant to Tile Roofing?
The tile roof’s layout and overlapping structure make it impossible for all the corners and edges to be sealed. It’s expected your roof will have some portions that will remain exposed.
The roof underlayment’s significance comes to the fore through these unprotected parts. Your tile roof can benefit the following from the underlayment:
- Cover specific areas of the roof that can hinder outdoor elements from possibly penetrating and damaging the roof surface
- Have a second layer of protection to resist moisture and heat
- Shield from the damaging effects of weather and outdoor elements
- Offer additional layer for water resistance or waterproofingin your roofing tile surface
- Seal edges, valleys, and roof protrusions that can’t be covered by your bare roofing tile surface and roof shingles
If installed correctly the first time, your roof underlayment can best perform its purpose to support your roof and can even last for years, its lifespan can reach up to two decades or more.
But for time-poor, from work to spending time with families, most peoplerely ontheirtradespeople to get the job done right, without really knowing what lies underneath their roofing. So it is always better to hire the most trusted people to work on your roofing. You’ll be saving yourself a lot of money and stress if you can ensure that everything is installed right the first time.
Always go for a periodic maintenance check to see if there are issues with your roof underlayment.Don’t wait for a storm or heavy rains or a leakage before getting it fixed. You may have to shell out some money today, but it’ll be more costly if you wait it out. What’s left undone may bring you more headaches in the long run.
When building a house, you don’t start with the roof; but that doesn’t undermine its importance to the entire structure. Just as the roof underlayment plays support, some may even opt not to have it but it doesn’t lessen its significance to your entire roofing structure.
