The Importance of Underlayment in Roofing Tile InstallationJuly 14, 2020

One crucial element that changes the way homeowners alter or modify their home properties is the surrounding condition of their location. If they frequently experience hot weather or heavy rains, then their home configuration and materials must be changed for them to adapt to these conditions and situations.

Roofing is directly affected by varying climate conditions. There are specific materials for roofing that suit best for different weather elements. Tiled roofs are one of the most common ways of providing adequate roofing for homes under any weather conditions and disturbances. Installing them can be expensive. However, their durability, eye-appealing looks, and cost-effectiveness make this type of roof suitable for home properties that experience harsh weather and outdoor conditions.

Roofing Underlayment for Tiled Roofs

While the installation of tiled roofs can already provide the needed resistance against moisture, heat, and other damaging elements, another layer that can further boost existing resistance and protective properties is roofing underlayment. Roofing underlayment is a barrier material that can resist or withstand water. It is typically installed directly onto the roof deck and applied under other roofing materials.

Roofing underlayment can be categorised into three types. The first one is asphalt-saturated felt. It is made from a wide combination of cellulose, polyester, bitumen, or asphalt that can be fully installed across the roof deck. Another type of underlayment that must be installed across the roof deck is synthetic underlayment. It is mainly comprised of asphalt and fibreglass, which helps the underlayment resist damages and obtain stability. It can effectively work with other waterproof roof products.

Lastly, rubberised asphalt is a type of underlayment that has a high percentage of asphalt and rubber polymers. The backing of this underlayment provides the needed waterproof seal between the material and the roof deck. Unlike other types of underlayment, this type of underlayment must be applied at valleys and around roof protrusions to effectively protect roof deck edges from water damage.

Importance of Roofing Underlayment

Not all tiled roofs can cover and protect the whole roofing structure. Without underlayment, some corners and edges of the roofing structure will not be protected from the damaging effects of weather and outdoor elements since tiled roofing has shingles that overlap on each other. This overlapping structure and layout of tiled roofs make the sealing of all corners impossible.

So, aside from the fact that underlayment can readily provide additional water resistance or waterproof needed for roofing tile surface, it can also cover specific areas of the roof. All types of underlayment previously mentioned are comprised of materials that add an extra layer of protection to roofing. These materials help form a barrier against moisture and any other outdoor elements that can possibly penetrate and damage the roof surface. Additionally, these materials can seal edges, valleys, and roof protrusions that are not normally covered by bare roofing tile surface and its associated roof shingles.

Installing roofing underlayment can significantly provide your property with a waterproof and water-resistant roof surface.
